Maritsa River
Plovdiv is unique not only because of its history and the hills, but also because of the big river, which is a natural dividing line between the southern and northern parts of the city.
In the past, large cities arose around the rivers, which are a source of life and fertility to date. Maritsa river flows from the beautiful Marichini Lakes of Rila Mountain. It is deeply connected with Bulgarian history and Bulgarian memory. It takes its name from the Turkish Meriç, which is inherited from the ancient Greek Hebros.
Maritsa River is the largest, flowing from the territory of Bulgaria – 472 km and with the most extensive catchment basin. After leaving our country, the river consecutively passes through the northeastern part of Greece and the European part of Turkey and flows into the White Sea. Maritsa River is the life force around which many cities are built.
Until the middle of the 19th century, it was navigable and various goods were transported on it by rafts. Today, many parks, bike lanes and benches have been built around the riverbed, providing an opportunity for relaxation and a breath of fresh air.
In ancient times it was considered a deity, and today it remains an irreplaceable water source, a unique natural beauty and a major factor for the development in business and tourism.
